Welcome to the IRC in Materials Processing

The Interdisciplinary Research Centre (IRC) in Materials for High Performance Application was set up in October 1989 at the universities of Birmingham and Swansea. At Birmingham the name changed to the IRC in Materials Processing in 2001, the research centre bringing together staff from Metallurgy and Materials and Chemical Engineering.

The mission statement of the IRC is:

“… a design-driven approach to the development of new materials, novel materials processing and manufacturing technologies and the subsequent use of computer aided materials engineering to allow efficient transfer to industry….”

Strategic objective of the IRC

The primary objective of the research programme in the IRC is the development of materials, through materials processing and of manufacturing technologies so that the properties of the materials are fully exploited. An essential part of this philosophy is the close interaction with industry. The programmes that are in operation with industry vary from long term projects to short term problem-solving.

Recently the activities of the IRC have been strengthened with major initiatives in casting and in process modelling and the setting up of two partnerships.

  • Casting partnership with Rolls-Royce plc
  • Partnership for Research in Simulation of Manufacturing and Materials (PRISM2)
With Rolls-Royce, IBM, ESI, AMD and University of Birmingham.

The vitality of the IRC is shown by the five professorial appointments since 2001.
